OVP overvoltage protection circuit

Overvoltage protection circuit (OVP) provides protection for downstream circuits from damage caused by excessive voltage. The OVP circuit monitors the DC voltage of an external power supply (such as an offline power supply or battery) and protects the subsequent circuit in one of two ways: a crowbar clamp circuit or a series switch.

The crowbar circuit short-circuits or clamps the power supply, limits the power supply voltage, and triggers possible protection functions, such as fuses.

Series switches use MOSFETs or transistors as switching elements connected in series on the power line. When an overvoltage occurs, the OVP circuit quickly turns off the MOSFET and disconnects the downstream circuit.
