Op amps as zero crossing detectors

Sine voltage signals are usually converted into square waves using zero crossing detectors. In this circuit, the op amp operates in open-loop comparator mode. The power supply voltage can be a single power supply voltage or a dual power supply voltage. This circuit is usually used for a zero-crossing startup process, such as turning on the load by starting a timer or calculating the period or frequency of the alternating voltage signal, or generating an ignition pulse through the microcontroller.

When the input signal is connected to V+ and V-grounded, when the input voltage rises above the ground voltage, i.e. when the input is positive, the output of the operational amplifier is +Vsat, the output is –Vsat, and the input is negative.

Alternatively, when the input signal is connected to V, V+ is grounded, and when the input voltage rises above the ground voltage, that is, when the input is positive, the output of the operational amplifier is -Vsat, the output is +Vsat, and the input is negative. This difference is used when the input signal is obtained from the secondary of the transformer and the square wave output will be used for some other applications.

However, a suitable filter circuit must be inserted between the input signal and the operational amplifier circuit to eliminate harmonics.
